943,830. Ball &c. mills ; separating solids. NISSO SEIKO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Oct. 29, 1962 [Oct. 27, 1961 (4)], No. 40834/62. Headings B2A and B2H. A grinding mill comprises a shell 1 having on its inner surface peripheral ribs 3 and generally vertical ribs 4, and a rotatably mounted helical feed screw 2 which serves on rotation to push grinding media packed between the shell and screw upwardly with respect to the screw. The ribs may be provided with an abrasion resisting coating. The lower end of the screw has fixed thereto a disc 14 the underside of which has inclined ribs 5 which define an inverted conical surface. Material to be ground and fluid enter a classifier 8, 11 through an inlet funnel 10 and are recirculated from the bottom of the shell by means of a pump 12. The size of the ground particles which are allowed to overflow the edge of classifier vessel 8 into an outlet via channel 9 can be controlled by raising or lowering size controller 11 by means of mechanism 13. The mill may be modified in various ways. For example, the grinding media located under the disc 14 may be replaced by other substances. Further, the disc may be supported from below by a slide mechanism. Also, the packed column may be supported by a grid plate. Further, the internal surface of the shell can be provided with a rubber coating and the internal surface of the classifier serve as the inlet funnel. In addition, the suspension of the material particles and the circulated fluid can be conveyed upward to the upper part of the packed column through pipes extending along the shell wall. Further, the suspension can be flowed out from the circumference of the enlarged part of the shell.
