Abstract
<PICT:0943811/C3/1> In a continuous mashing process, filtration of the wort is effected by spreading the mash after conversion on a perforate conveyer so that a settled filter bed of grains is formed through which the wort percolates. Mash issuing from a mashing vessel 19 is spread by a spreader 26 over a level or slightly inclined perforate conveyer belt 20, e.g. of 20-mesh nylon, driven by a roller 23 and guided by rollers 20 over a perforated support comprising slotted plates 21, which is imperforate however at the point of deposition of the mash. Wort passing through the filter bed of grains 36 (Fig. 4, not shown) is collected in tanks 25 arranged in batches. The first batch of tanks underlies the stabilizing region of the belt 20 in which the filter bed is formed and cloudy wort passing through into any tank is recirculated by a pump 27 to pass through the belt filter bed into the succeeding tank. The wort is then collected in a central production region in a main collecting tank 28. Farther downstream the filter bed grains are sparged with hot water and the weak wort received below the belt 20 is sparged over the production region and/or directed to tank 28. Weirs of progressively decreasing height between the filter bed and tanks 25, or alternatively a sloping belt 20 produce a gradual lowering of the level of liquid in the mash on the conveyer. A scraper 29 removes spent grains from the belt which are ejected through an outlet 30 in a clean plastic cover 32 enclosing the apparatus. The belt is back-washed clean with water on its return run below and a heating jacket 31 surrounds tanks 25 and belt 20. The conversion of the mash may take place on the belt 20 over an imperforate upstream heated extension to the support 21. Alternatively one or more separate heated belts may be used.
