943,706. Freeze drying. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 16, 1962 [Oct. 25, 1961], No. 38203/61. Heading F4G. A freeze drying process comprises freezing the material to be dried in a closed vessel by immersion in a liquid below 0‹ C. and having a higher boiling point than water, e.g. butanol or isobutanol, reducing the pressure in the vessel below the vapour pressure of ice at 0‹ C., viz. 4.5 mm. of mercury, and heating the remaining liquid in the vessel to its boiling point so that the vapour of the liquid contacts the frozen material, condenses and drains back to the bottom of the vessel giving up its latent heat to the ice to evaporate the latter. The water vapour from the evaporation of the ice may be compressed and passed through a coil immersed in the liquid.
