Abstract
A method of making a sintered body of permeable P.T.F.E comprises mixing P.T.F.E., which has not previously been subjected to a heat treatment above 327 DEG C., in powdered form with a powdered fugitive material which is capable of being removed from the mixture at temperatures below that at which the P.T.F.E. is sintered subjecting the powdered mixture to pressure to shape it to the form required, and subjecting the shaped form thus produced to heat treatment to sinter the P.T.F.E., the fugitive material being removed during or subsequent to the sintering process. The fugitive material can be one which is volatile and is removed during the sintering or one which is dissolved out from the sintered product. Specified are polymethylmethacrylate, polystyrene, cellulose acetobutyrate, volatile salts, e.g. ammonium bicarbonate, and soluble salts. In examples preforms are prepared by pressing in a mould mixtures of P.T.F.E. and (1) poly methyl methacrylate, (2) sodium chloride, (3) ammonium bicarbonate and (4) sodium chloride and poly methyl methacrylate. Sintering is effected at 370 DEG C. Sodium chloride is dissolved out of the product obtained in Examples (2) and (4).ALSO:A method of making a sintered body of permeable P.T.F.E suitable for use as filter materials comprises mixing P.T.F.E., which has not previously been subjected to a heat treatment above 327 DEG C. in powdered form with a powdered fugitive material which is capable of being removed from the mixture at temperatures below that at which the P.T.F.E. is sintered, subjecting the powdered mixture to pressure to shape it to the form required, and subjecting the shaped form thus produced to heat treatment to sinter the P.T.F.E., the fugitive material being removed during or subsequent to the sintering process. In examples preforms are prepared by pressing in a mould mixtures of P.T.F.E. and (1) poly methyl methacrylite, (2) sodium chloride, (3) ammonium bicarbonate and (4) sodium chloride and poly methyl methacrylate. Sintering is effected at 370 DEG C. Sodium chloride is dissolved out of the product obtained in examples (2) and (4). An attachment member for a filter element comprising shaped bodies of the material may consist of an integrally moulded peripheral ring of solid P.T.F.E. Alternatively the porous element may be sprayed over selected areas with a metal so as to build up an attachment member.
