Abstract
943,129. Controlling liquid levels. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Aug. 3, 1962 [Aug. 29,1961], No. 31052/61. Heading G1H. In an automatic filler device for filling containers to a predetermined level in which a filler tube 1 is connected through a pipe 7 to a liquid supply source and a valve 4 is provided for controlling the passage of liquid through the tube 1, the valve 4 operating in response to an increase in air pressure in a dip tube 8 due to the rise of liquid therein, the valve 4 is operated by a two stage pneumatic control cylinder 6, the valve 4 being partially closed by operation of the first state when the container is partially full and completely closed by operation of the second stage when the container is filled to a predetermined level, the variation in pressure necessary to operate each stage of the cylinder being produced through a pneumatic relay by movement of a baffle 11 in an air jet in response to the air pressure increase in the dip tube 8. In the arrangement shown as the liquid rises in the dip tube 8 the increase in air pressure therein collapses a metal bellows 10 to move the baffle 11 away from a nozzle 12 towards a nozzle 13 thus resulting in a pressure change in a pipe 15 which pressure change is amplified through a restriction 15a and, by a known pneumatic relay, operates regulating means to cause compressed air to be fed to a line 17 and to reduce pressure in a line 17a to atmosphere to operate the first stage of the pneumatic control cylinder. The first stage operation of the cylinder firstly closes the valve 4 to the dotted line position to reduce the liquid flow rate through the opening 3. As the liquid continues to rise in the container the baffle 11 continues to rise to cause further pressure changes in the pipes 15,16. The pressure change in pipe 16 is now amplified through a restriction 16a and, by a pneumatic relay, to operate regulating means associated with air supply lines 18,18a to cause a reduction of air pressure to atmosphere in line 18 and an increase in pressure in line 18a to operate the second stage of the pneumatic control cylinder to close the valve 4.
