A protective cover for the swivel 30 of a spinning lure comprises a tubular member 12 having a tapered end 14 containing a restriction adapted to restrain the leading end ring 38 of the swivel against rotation. The restriction comprises a tapered bore 22 having at least one longitudinal and diametral groove 32 for receiving the leading end ring 38 of the swivel. The fishing line extends from the ring 38 through a small bore 16 in the tapered end 14. A series of small diameter holes may be provided in the wall of the cover. A fin or a pair of fins 40 on the guard prevent it from rotating. The non-tapered end of the guard is chamfered at 36. In another embodiment, the tapered bore is provided with a pair of diametrically spaced longitudinal ribs and with an annular resilient lip of reduced diameter at its wider end. The leading end ring of the swivel is forced past the resilient lip. The guard may be made of plastic material or metal and may be opaque or transparent; it may act as a weight.
