Abstract
942,618. Feedwater supply systems. G. & J. WEIR Ltd. Sept. 13, 1962 [Oct. 3, 1961], No. 35690/61. Heading F4A. In a feedwater supply system wherein an extraction pump feeds condensate from a main condenser to a deaerator, main and standby feed pumps are provided, the suction of main pump being connected to the deaerator discharge whilst that of the standby pump is connected to the supply line from the condenser to the deaerator. Preferably, and as shown in the Figure, the two feed pumps 16, 17 are similar and feed into a common supply line 26, the suctions being provided respectively with valves 18, 22 and 19, 23 whereby either pump can serve as the main pump. For example, if 16 is to serve as the main pump, the valves 18, 23 are opened and the valves 19, 22 are closed. The main pump then draws its water from the deaerator 11. If the pump 16 fails mechanically or loses its suction the standby pump 17 starts automatically, drawing its water from the line 12 from the main condenser 10 to the deaerator and in which sufficient pressure to ensure suction for the pump is maintained by the condensate extraction pump 13. If, with the standby pump operating, the boiler demand is such that the pressure in the line 12 falls a non-return valve 29 in a line 28 from a cold feed water tank 27 opens and the pump 17 draws its water both from the tank and the main condenser.
