Abstract

A method of manufacturing an aircraft fuselage (or a substantial portion thereof), which method comprises manufacturing a first frame 40 which is installed in a jig (42) (fig 8a) that supports the fuselage while it is being constructed. Precisely defined connection struts 44 are then fixed to the first frame and then a subsequent frame 70 is fastened to the struts. In this way, the second frame 70 is precisely located by means of the struts 44 without the need for providing a precision jig for a location. Further struts 44 may be fixed to the second frame 70 and a third frame fixed to these further struts. In this way, a fuselage can be constructed. Finally, a skin (82) (fig. 8d) can be added. Each frame may consist of a central sheet of titanium or aluminium alloy (34) (figs. 1 - 3) and a series of ribs (32) around open cells (30). Alternatively it may be made by bonding three sheets together, and involve superplastic forming and machining (figs. 1, 4 and 5). <IMAGE>
