Abstract
Metal carboxylates are prepared by reacting an aliphatic C7-C20 carboxylic acid obtained by hydrogenating and then oxidising a product of the hydroformylation of an olefine, or an anhydride thereof, with a metal compound so as to produce the metal carboxylate and a by-product which is volatile under the reaction conditions, the carboxylic acid or anhydride being maintained in the liquid phase and the pressure being below atmospheric. Suitable metal compounds are oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and salts of lower aliphatic carboxylic acids; specified metals are alkaline earth metals, Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr and Ce. Suitable acids are those obtained by the oxidation, e.g. with NaOH, of high-boiling residues from the distillation of alcohols formed by the hydrogenation of the product of hydroformylation of olefines. Inert diluents may be used; preferred temperatures are 100-200 DEG C. The Provisional Specification refers to the production of metal salts of any carboxylic acid by the method described.
