Abstract
941,982. Controlling aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 3, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1643/60. Heading B7G. In an aircraft control system having power operated controls for the final movement of the tailplane and having an artificial feel unit, the pilot's control stick 1 is pivotally mounted at 2 for operation of a first non-linear linkage 5 which consists of two arms 6-7 and 13-11 of equal length pivotally attached at 7 and 13 respectively, to the aircraft structure 9 and articulated to one another at their free ends by a link 6-11 which is shorter than the distance between points 7-13 and which is selected in length so as to give a desired degree of non- linearity of the linkage. An artificial feel unit (not shown) provided with a conventional trim adjuster is operated by a rod 14 connected at 12 to the arm 13-11. A second non-linear linkage connected to the first linkage by a lay shaft 8 comprises an articulated quadrilateral which has its base 15-19 on the aircraft structure, two arms 15-16 and 19-18 of equal length articulated to the base and at their free ends to one another by a link 16-18 shorter than the base 15-19. The arm 19-18 is connected at 20 to an aerodynamic control surface 22 (e.g. an all-moving tailplane) by a link 21 and a conventional power jack (not shown).
