Abstract

941,783. Liquid/gas contacting apparatus. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 9, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 861/62. Heading B1R. A liquid-gas contacting tray 15 has a main flat surface 10 with a plurality of perforations 13 which are substantially normal to the surface 10 and terminate at the surface 10, and a lesser number of apertures 14 defined by obliquely extending walls 11, 12 which may, as shown, rise from the surface 10. The invention reduces the hydrostatic pressure in an apparatus, e.g. a rectification column, employing the trays. The apertures 14 may be more densely arranged near the periphery of the tray than near the centre. In other embodiments, see Figs. 5a to 5d (not shown). The wails defining the apertures 14 do not extend above the surface 10 (Fig. 5a) or only the walls 12 do so (Fig. 5b), or the walls 11, 12 merge together to form cusp-shaped or corrugated protuberances (Figs. Sc, 5d respectively).
