The cylinder 12 or piston 14 of an hydraulic pit prop 11 is partially enclosed in a protective shroud 19 so as to define therewith an annular space 20 for the reception of a shockabsorbing material such as bitumen, polyvinyl chloride or polyisocyonates in forming composition. The guard wire may be made of sheet steel or a glass fibre impregnated with a spongy resin.
