Abstract

941,685. Surgical needle guns. H. G. EAST. Oct. 10, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 37378/61. Heading A5R. In a needle gun for use in making tuberculosis tests the needles are normally retracted behind a guard by a spring, from which position they must be pressed forward manually when necessary. A latch is provided, however, which prevents retraction of the needles after they have been pressed forward by a predetermined amount. In the form described the needles 6 are held in a block 14 on a head 8, being secured thereto by a threaded ring 16. A guard 4, having holes 5 through which the needles may pass, is carried at the end of a sliding rod 7 which is normally urged towards the left by a spring 18, so that the tips of the needles are protected. When the instrument is pressed against the patient's skin the spring 18 is compressed as the guard 4 is pressed back and the needles pass through the skin. After a predetermined penetration, however, a projection 9 on a spring- loaded plunger 13, enters a recess 11 in the rod 7 and holds the latter, at the same time giving an indication to the operator that the penetration has been made.
