Abstract

941,249. Binding machines. B. H. BUNN CO. Oct. 4, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No. 35739/61 Heading B8C. Apparatus for passing twine around a bundle to be tied up comprises a twine feeding arm secured to a rotatable hub, the arm having a first part extending radially from the hub, and a second part pivoted to the first part on an axis parallel to but spaced from that of the hub and having a twine feeding outer end and means for oscillating the second part about its pivot on the first part, to alter the distance between its twine feeding end and the hub. Fig. 2 is a view on the line 2-2 of the elevation of Fig. 1, of a tying machine with a frame 10 in which is fixed a tube 13. The hub 17 is driven by a chain-andsprocket gear from a drive shaft 16, and supports and rotates the first part 18 of the twine feeding arm 19. The second arm part 21 is passed round a bundle on a table 22 which is supported by a rod 23 freely rotatable in hub 17, the table being weighted so as to remain horizontal. The twine is fed into tube 13 at its end remote from the table, and emerges from the free end of a hollow member 27 of part 21. A bell-crank lever 28 is pivoted on part 18, one arm being fixed to member 27, and the other end having a roller 33 in a cam slot 42, the roller being urged against one face of the slot by a torsion spring 36, so that as the arm rotates, the free end of arm part 21 describes a path 39, which avoids shaft 16 and any other obstacles, and encompasses a bigger bundle than would a rigid arm short enough to avoid such obstacles. The cam slot is defined between a pair of inner plates 43, 44, and a pair of outer plates 45, 46, suitably supported by frame 10, each pair of plates being separated along a line 47 passing through the axis of tube 13, so that the slot defining plates can be removed without disassembling the arm or table.
