In a variable load control valve for a railway braking system which varies the brake cylinder pressure in response to changes in the load carried by the vehicle, a weigh beam 32 is mounted for longitudinal movement between positions E (empty) and L (load), spaced abutment members 55, 56 engage the weigh beam for varying the brake cylinder pressure upon movement of the weigh beam between the positions E and L and guide means, formed by a pivotally mounted link 58 or 59, is associated with each abutment member for preventing lateral stress thereon. The control valve is provided with two air inlet connections 44 and 46 leading from a triple valve or EP unit and from a main reservoir respectively. An air outlet connection 47 is connected to the brake cylinder relay valve. The air passes from the connection 46 to the outlet 47 through an inlet valve 48 and can exhaust through an exhaust valve 49. A diaphragm 50 extends across the upper portion of the valve body 43 and is subject to the required output pressure to the brake cylinder relay valve. A diaphragm 42 extends across the lower portion of the valve body 43 and air from the triple valve or EP unit acts on the underside of the diaphragm 42. In operation, when a pin 18 is in the position E, the weigh beam 32 is in the position shown in the drawing and the ratio is such that a pressure of 50 1b. per square inch acting on the underside of the diaphragm 42 produces a load on the diaphragm abutment 56, corresponding to the pressure acting on the diaphragm 42 multiplied by the effective area of the diaphragm 42 multiplied by the leverage ratio produced by the positions of the abutments 55, 56 and the pin 31. This load is balanced by a pressure above the diaphragm 50 which is equal to the required brake cylinder pressure, for example 50 1b. per square inch. Any intermediate pressure under the diaphragm 42 produces a proportional output pressure above the diaphragm 50. Specification 927,001 is referred to.
