Abstract

1,130,823. Fluid-pressure brakes. WEST- ; INGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 8 Dec., 1966 [20 Jan., 1966], No. 2680/66. Heading F2F. In a compressed-air braking system for a rail vehicle load-responsive valves 5, 6 associated respectively with axles 1, 2 of the vehicle are of the self-lapping type adapted to give an output pressure between zero and the input pressure in accordance with axle load, and the valves are arranged in series with one another and with a supply reservoir 18 such that the final output at 22, used to modify the braking of the vehicle, is dependent solely on the effect of the valve associated with the lightest-loaded axle. Each valve comprises a diaphragm system 8 which responds to the degree of deflection of the respective axle spring 3 or 4 and also to pressure at outlet 16 to control the movement of exhaust tube 10, which together with spring- loaded inlet valve 12 constitutes a self-lapping valve assembly, whereby a balance between spring deflection and outlet pressure is achieved in all circumstances in the case of valve 5, and in the case of valve 6 is maintained only when axle 2 is the lightest-loaded axle, in which case pressure is progressively reduced in stages by the two valves. When axle 1 is the lightest loaded, all pressure reduction takes place in the valve 5 and valve 6 remains open. The reduced pressure at 22 is fed to a cylinder 24 where it acts on a spring-loaded piston 25 so as to determine the position of a roller 31 carried by a lever 29 pivoted at 30, the roller acting as a fulcrum for a lever 32 through which a control force, obtained from a brake pipe 40 via the usual relay/emergency valve 37 and a pressureresponsive diaphragm, is transmitted to the movable exhaust tube 47 of a self-lapping valve 47, 48, 50 controlling supply of air from the reservoir 18 to brake cylinder 46. As a result, the control force on the self-lapping valve 47, 48, 50 is determined by a combination of brake pipe pressure and loading of the lightest-loaded axle and is continuously variable in accordance with both factors. Alternatively, the arrangement may be modified so that only two variations of braking effort in accordance with load are possible, e.g. by incorporating toggle mechanism between the piston 25 and the roller 31 which would snap over at a predetermined final output pressure at 22 to move the roller 31 from one to the other of two positions.
