Abstract
940,839. Sighting optical apparatus; cameras; range-finders. F. WALTHER, E. WALTHER, and A. ERBE. Nov. 10, 1959 [Nov. 10,1958], No. 38019/59. Headings G2A and G2J. In order to aim a camera, telescope or weapon on to a target in darkness, a device is provided comprising a source of visible or invisible radiation,a condenser lens or mirror and an objective lens, which may be the lens of the instrument being aimed, the condenser being so formed that in conjunction with the objective there is produced on the target a central intensely radiated spot, a field surrounding and less intensely radiated than the spot, and a field surrounding the first field and radiated more intensely than the first field but less than the central spot. As shown in Fig. 1, the condenser may have a central plane face 4 and a surrounding ring-like lens 3 so that visible light source 1 is focused by objective lens 5 as a bright spot 6 which will be surrounded by a darker area 8 itself surrounded by a bright field 9. The central part of the condenser may alternatively be formed as a dispersing lens and, as shown in Fig. 5, two such condenser-objective systems may be used for aiming and range-finding. Rangefinding is effected by movement of angled mirror 19, under control of micrometer drum 21, until bright spot 22 registers with bright spot 6. Light from source and condenser may be projected on to the optical axis of the camera or telescope by a semi-reflector, the objective of the camera or telescope acting in this case as the lens 5. Infrared radiation may be used instead of visible light and an image converter provided.
