Abstract

Penicillins of the formula <FORM:0940712/C2/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group are prepared by hydrogenating in the presence of a catalyst a penicillin of the formula or a non-toxic salt thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and each is an aryl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl or aralkoxycarbonyl group or R1 is hydrogen. The catalyst is preferably palladium supported on an alkaline earth metal carbonate. Examples describe the production of hydroxymethylpenicillin from dibenzyloxycarbonylamino - oxymethyl-penicillin and from benzamido-oxymethyl-penicillin, of a -hydroxypentylpenicillin from a -benzamidooxypentylpenicillin, and of a -hydroxybenzylpenicillin from a -benzamido-oxybenzylpenicillin.
