Abstract

940,324. Automatic temperature control. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. Aug. 29,1960 [Sept.11, 1959], No. 29735/60. Heading G3R. [ Also in Division F2] A burner fuel control system comprises a valve seat 82 controlled by a fuel valve 88 operated by a bimetal element 86 in response to intermittent energization of a heater 108 for the element where - by the opening of the valve is proportional to the period of energization. Space heating burner 12 is supplied with gas via manifold 10 and valve 36 operated through compound levers 54, 56 moved by thermal bellows 46 and phial 42 heated by pilot burner 16 ignited from continuously burning pilot 138. Gas for pilot 16 passes at 64 through valve seat 82 axially adjustable by knob 76 for setting the temperature of the heated space and is controlled by valve 88 actuated by bimetal 86 heated electrically by element 108 in series with heater 114, bimetal 116 actuating contacts 102, 122 in series with the heaters. Contact 122 is carried by a flexible spring 124 positioned by a rod and tube thermal element 128 detecting the space temperature. Initial rotation of knob 76 and cam 98 connects the heaters through switch 100 to the electric supply 102. The heater 108 opens valve 88 to supply gas to pilot 16 which heats mercury phial 42 and opens valve 36 to supply gas to burners 12 and heat the space. When element 128 is cold flexing contact 122 follows contact 120 and the contacts are only broken after a comparatively long period by bimetal 116 heated at 114. Thus at low space temperatures the heating periods are long and valve 88 opens wide to give a high pilot flame 16, a wide open valve 36 and a high flame at burner 12. As the space temperature approaches the set value element 120 moves spring 124 to the left, contacts 120, 122 break after a short interval of time and the heating periods of element 86 are reduced so that valve 88 opens only a small amount to give a reduced pilot flame and a reduced opening of valve 36 for a lower flame at burner 12.
