Abstract

940,197. Chlorosulphonated polyethylene. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., Oct. 12, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 34469/59. Addition to 847,164. Heading C3P. Rubber-like, chlorosulphonated polyethylene which is curable with metal oxides and which has a chlorine content of 38 to 48 % is prepared from polyethylene of density from 0À935 to 0À960 and of solubility in carbon tetrachloride of at least 1% by weight at 110-125 ‹C, by dissolving the polyethylene in a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride or tetrachloro-ethylene and homogeneously chlorosulphonating with chlorine and sulphur dioxide in admixture or separately and in order, the process being characterized in that either (A) the polyethylene is of #M w /#M n of at least 1 but not from 2 to 10 and is of melt index of from 0À2 to 200, and wherein the chlorosulphonated polyethylene has a sulphur content of from 0À1 to 3%, or (B) the polyethylene is of #M w /#M n of from 2 to 10 and either the polyethylene is of melt index of from 0À2 to 200, and wherein the chlorosulphonated polyethylene has a sulphur content of 0À1 up to but not including 0À7%, or the polyethylene is of melt index from 0À2 up to but not including 2À0 and wherein the chlorosulphonated polyethylene has a sulphur content of 0À1 to 3À0%. The polyethylene may be prepared as disclosed in Specification 639,306 or 682,420 or by the use of co-ordination catalysts derived from compounds of Group IV A , VA or VIA metals + organometallic compounds of Group I, II or III metals. The examples illustrate the compounding and curing of various chlorosulphonated polyethylenes with materials such as epichlorhydrin/propane-2, 2-bisphenol condensation product, hydrogenated rosin, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide butyraldehyde/ aniline antioxidant, and dipentamethylene thiuram disulphide.
