Abstract
An alkyl aluminium growth product containing C2 to C30 alkyl groups in a statistical distribution characterised by the Poisson relationship is subjected to continuous distillation at a temperature between 0 and 200 DEG C., a pressure between 1 micron and 5mm Hg and a contact time between 0.001 and 2 seconds, alkyl aluminium fractions containing a non-statistical distribution of alkyl groups being recovered. The lower alkyl group compounds are in the overhead fraction, and this may be returned to the growth reactor and grown by reaction with further low molecular weight olefin (e.g. ethylene) to higher alkyl group compounds.
