Abstract
940,046. Making commutators. FERRANTI Ltd. Sept. 5, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 33942/61. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H2] A commutator comprises a number of spacedapart metal segments 1 sealed to ceramic end discs 2 and is cooled by gas passing through apertures 6 in the end discs and out through the spaces between segments. The commutator is constructed by machining a slab of copper to form a rack having the required number of segments joined by a bridge of metal, Fig. 3. After bending the rack round a mandrel, the ceramic end discs are attached by metallizing the faces and brazing them to the rack after which the segments are separated by removing the metal bridge; mounting ferrules 5 are also brazed in place. To increase the flow of cooling gas the spaces between segments may be inclined to the radial direction or curved to act as an impeller, Fig. 6 (not shown), also the end discs may be provided with air intake scoops.
