Abstract

<PICT:0939719/III/1> A coke oven battery comprises side-by-side coking chambers, a collector main 15 disposed along the length of the battery, an uptake pipe 13 leading from the top of each chamber into the main 15 (through a goose-neck 16), a pivoted valve 17 in each pipe 13 for controlling the gas flow therethrough, and means for actuating the valve 17, the means comprising an arm 21 for pivoting the valve 17, a continuously rotatable shaft 32, a disc 35 on the shaft and rotatable therewith, and a fluxible connection, e.g. a spring 26, between the disc 35 and the arm 21. The valve 17 comprises a pan 18 which is filled with liquid from sprays 28, 31 when in its closed position E. The apparatus operates as follows:-An electric motor 39 drives the shaft 32 uniformly to make one revolution per coking cycle, a disc 35 being provided for each chamber. When a valve is in the open position A, an operator connects one end 37 of the appropriate spring 26 to a peripheral hole 36 in the disc 35 at position F. For the first 200 degrees rotation of the shaft, the spring 26 exerts no downward pull on the arm 21. Thereafter, rotation of the disc 35 through a further 70 degrees pulls the lever 21, which has a counter weight 24 which balances the empty pan 18, down about a shaft 19 to raise the pan 18 successively through positions B...E. The operator disconnects the spring 26 from the disc 35 to allow the disc to rotate unhindered through the last 90 degrees. The valve 17 is opened manually for the cycle to be restarted.
