Abstract
939,664. Electric heating mantles. ISOPAD Ltd., and H. REIK. May 1, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 3464/60. Class 39 (3). A heating mantle, shaped to receive and surround a vessel, includes a woven metal wire mesh heating element arranged on or near the inner surface of the mantle, and an external lagging of heatinsulating material The wire mesh 12, Fig. 1, to which contact is made by a metal band 15, and the strands of which may or may not be insulated from one another, is lagged by asbestos 13 contained within metal wall 14, a layer 11 of insulation forming the heating surface of the mantle, which may be applied to the wall 10 of a glass of water. A hemispherical mantle (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), may be formed by sewing sectors of the mesh together with wire, and providing contact rings at the equator and near the bottom. A cylindrical mantle (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), may have contact rings at its two ends or, if the mesh is not completely closed upon itself, contact bars extending axially along the unclosed edges. In a modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), the heating current is supplied to an uninsulated heating conductor conductively attached to the mesh in a zig-zag or helical path, whereby the conductor and the mesh share the heating current. The metal current supply rings or bars may be formed by spraying; the provision of an insulating layer at the heating surface, as in Fig. 1, permits application to liquids or metals; and the wires of the mesh, of which details of size and loading are given, may be of stainless steel. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use of nickel, chrome, copper/nickel, or copper, and to heating panel and heating tape structures.
