Abstract

1,101,652. Superconductors. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. 1 Feb., 1965 [30 Jan., 1964; 17 Dec.. 1964], No. 4361/65. Heading HlK. A superconductive coil has filamentary resistive material connecting adjacent turns of the coil, the resistance being high enough to obtain current build up within a reasonably short time but low enough to provide a path of lower resistance than the wire of the turns so that transition from superconductive to normal state occurs rapidly without the occurrence of local hot spots. The Figure shows a coil of superconductor wires 4 separated by conductive filaments 10 of glass wool impregnated with conductive varnish or resin continuously or at spaced intervals. Insulating material 2 of polyethylene terephthalate and copper foils 6 separate the coil layers; the foils may be slotted and connected to the superconductive wire portion between two layers and serve to conduct away heat during transitions. The space in the coil may be filled with a resistance paste comprising graphite, carbon or metal particles. The superconductor wire may be protected with a thin coating of silver, gold or copper. The superconductor may consist of Nb-Sn or Nb-Zr. The assembly may comprise cavities containing evaporable liquids such as nitrogen or water to increase the thermal mass.
