Abstract

To provide quiet riding qualities, a tyre tread is composed of a mixture of (a) 100 parts by weight of synthetic polybutadiene rubber or a butadiene-styrene copolymer having up to 55% by weight of combined styrene, and (b) 15 to 100 parts by weight of solid petroleum asphalt having a penetration value of 180 to 1,000 hundredths of a centimetre under a load of 5 grams in 5 seconds at 25 DEG C. (ASTM D 5-49), and a ring and ball softening point of 70 DEG to 115 DEG F. (ASTM D 36-46). The asphalt used should have an asphaltene content of not more than 18%, preferably less than 7%, a specific gravity of 0,98 to 1,03, preferably 1,001 to 1,02, and a Cleveland open cup flash point of 500 DEG to 575 DEG F. The polymer rubber may be compounded with 5 to 30 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon oil plasticizer having a boiling point in excess of 400 DEG F., and the mixture may be effected on rubber mills or by mixing rubber latex with an emulsified asphalt, the resultant mix being coagulated to provide an asphalt/rubber crumb. The mixture is compounded with carbon black and the usual vulcanizing ingredients. The Specification contains specific examples of suitable compounds.
