Abstract

An elastomeric composition comprises a synthetic rubber prepared by emulsion polymerization of a material comprising at least one conjugated diolefin at a temperature below 15 DEG C. the rubber having a raw Mooney value of at least 90, and between 15 and 50 parts by weight of a softener per 100 parts by weight of rubber. Specified diolefins are butadiene, isoprene and pentadiene and materials specified as copolymerizable therewith are styrene, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate. Specified softeners are liquid conjugated diolefin polymers, palm oil, rape oil, olive oil, linseed oil, castor bean oil, soya bean oil, tung oil, bitumens, gilsonite, rafaelite, asphalts, pine tar, paraffin wax, mineral oils, oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid, ceresin, naphthalenes, wool grease, carnauba wax, glycerol, glyceryl monostearate and monooleate, phenol-formaldehyde resins, poly-alpha-methyl styrene, polystyrene, dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, polybutene, zinc resinate, cumarone resins and dihydroabietic acid. Reinforcing agents such as carbon blacks, ferric oxide, magnesium carbonate, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, hydrated alumina, kieselguhr, slate dust, zinc peroxide, zinc chloride, lead peroxide, lead oxide, chlorinated paraffins, glue, barytes, fossil flour, lithopone, clays, finely divided silica and whiting may be added. Lists of the usual vulcanizing agents, accelerators, and anti-oxidants are given. The composition may be prepared by adding a dispersion of the softener to a latex of the rubber or the latex may be coagulated and the softener milled in.
