Abstract

939,535. Viscometers. TECHNE (CAMBRIDGE) Ltd. March 20, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961; June 8, 1961; Jan. 15, 1962], Nos. 255/61, 20795/61 and 1450/62. Class 106 (2). In a viscometer of the type where the liquid under test is forced through a capillary tube 1 by a constant pressure applied to the liquid either directly or through the medium of a gas by a piston 11 mvoing in a cylinder 12. A diaphragm 15 sensitive to the pressure the piston 11 is exerting on the liquid or gas carries a rod 16 held by a flexible member 18 so that changes in pressure acting on the piston move rod 16 towards or away from a jet 19 connected to a servo system to maintain the pressure on the piston at a constant value. Means are provided, Fig. 5 (not shown), to compensate for temperature variations. The time taken for the piston to drop a predetermined distance can be measured and recorded by means of contacts on arms 55, 56 and the piston may be raised and lowered automatically by means of contacts. The first Provisional Specification discloses a capillary, through which the liquid is forced by movement of the piston formed as a helical groove in the peripheral surface of the piston or alternatively extending lengthwise through the piston. The second Provisional Specification discloses a similar capillary formed between two interfitting parts which constitute the piston. Specification 894,749 also is referred to.
