[Also in Division E2] A chromatography column 1 has its inner space terminated at its lower end by a piece of porous material 2, for example sintered glass or porous polytetrafluoroethylene, an elastic disc 4, arranged beneath the porous material, having an axially extending capillary hole in its centre and grooves or scratches on its upper surface. The porous material 2 and disc 4 are placed in a sleeve 3 of elastic material, for example silicone rubber, which is compressed under controlled pressure in casing 5 by the column 1, the column being mounted in a lower clip and an adjustable upper arranged on a rod (20). Another liquid, or gas bubbles may be introduced into the eluate by means of capillary inlets in casing 5 (Fig. 2 not shown). The upper clip is divided into an upper part which may be tightened on the rod (20) and a lower part having a movable jaw (26) which holds the column, the jaw and the stationary part of the clip being joined by bridges (281 or 291) which function substantially as a jointed link between the jaw and the stationary part of the clip. Above the upper clip on rod (20) may be placed a third clip (33) to hold the top closure 32 of the column in position (Figs. 6 and 7 not shown). The thermostatting jacket 13 may be used to support a long thin column by the use of inserts across the annular space between the column and the jacket.
