Abstract

A high molecular weight polymer of trioxane or a copolymer thereof with a minor proportion of an epoxide is prepared in finely divided form by polymerizing at 20 DEG to 130 DEG C. with a cationic catalyst in the presence of sufficient inert solvent to keep the polymer in suspension, a portion of the solvent being present. Specified epoxides are propylene oxide and epichlorhydrin. The catalyst may be boron trifluoride etherate or a trialkyl oxonium fluoroborate, which are preferred or similar compounds including boron trifluoride, bismuthoxyfluoride, and trialkyl oxonium tetrachloroferrate. Specified solvents are benzene, chlorbenzene, nitrobenzene, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, cycloheptane, cyclooctane, pentane, heptane and hexane.
