Abstract
939,428. Controlling clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Nov. 22, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 40999/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A servomotor comprises a flexible diaphragm 25, or a piston, spring-urged towards the right and connected by a rod 14 with an element, such as a clutch, to be operated, an assembly of plates 45, 46 operatively connected by a rod 19 and block 63 with an input lever 18 connected with an operator's clutch pedal, valve heads 53, 54 carried by a stem 52 and operable by movement of the assembly 45, 46, and a one-way valve 57 with a passage 62 therethrough for controlling the rate of movement of the diaphragm 25 in one direction. As shown, the diaphragm is permanently subjected to atmospheric pressure in a chamber 26, whilst a chamber 27 may be connected through the valve assembly with atmosphere or a vacuum reservoir, but the arrangement may alternatively be one in which both sides of the diaphragm are normally connected to suction and one side is connected to atmosphere to provide the operating pressure difference, or one in which operation is effected by super-atmospheric pressure on one side of the diaphragm. With the parts in the positions shown the chamber 27 is connected to atmosphere through passages 44, 43, a chamber 34, the passage 62 and a port 48 connecting with a chamber 35 which has an atmospheric connection (not shown) and is separated from the chamber 34 by a flexible diaphragm 33. Leftward movement of the assembly 45, 46 closes the port 48 and causes the valve head 54 to be lifted from a vacuum port 42 so that the chamber 27 is evacuated to cause leftward movement of the diaphragm and disengagement of the clutch. On release of the clutch pedal springs 51, 55 cause closure of the port 42 and opening of the port 48 so that atmospheric air passes to the chamber 27 and lifts the valve 57 against a spring 59 until the pressure difference across the valve 57 falls to the extent that it is overcome by the spring 59 when the valve closes and further flow of air into the chamber 27 is restricted by the passage 62.
