939,261. Cutting stone. G. M. REID. Jan. 20, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 5966/59. Class 124. A method of producing a three-dimensional figure from a model comprises mounting the model so that it may be rotated, projecting, by means of a light beam, a shadow of at least one side boundary of the model on to a screen, providing a rotary cutting tool adjacent the block and movable in the plane containing the axes of rotation of the block and the tool, scanning the edge of the shadow by a device connected to the tool, turning the block and the model through the same small angle and again scanning the shadow, repeating the turning and scanning until both model and block have turned through a large angle, e.g. 360 degrees. The axes of rotation of the model and the block may be parallel or at right angles to one another. As shown, light from a source 5 may project the shadow of a model 1 on to a board 6, a mirror 11 turning the beam through 90 degrees. A pointer 9, connected directly to a tool 8, may scan the outline of the shadow, the tool 9 following the pointer exactly and cutting the block. The edge of the shadow may be scanned by a light-sensitive device connected to mechanism controlling the movement of the tool. Specification 939,262 is referred to.
