Abstract

The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formulae <FORM:0939242/IV(a)/1> and <FORM:0939242/IV(a)/2> wherein X is 0-4, Y is 0 or 1, R1 is a phenyl, alkylphenyl or alkyl-substituted phenoxyphenyl radical, R2 is an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms and R3 is an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms. The dyes are magenta-coloured cyan-forming couplers and are used in photo-graphic silver halide emulsions (see Group XX). The dyes are prepared by coupling a 1-hydroxy-2-naphthamide with a suitable diazo-nium compound. In an example 1-hydroxy-2-naphthanilide is dissolved in pyridine and coupled with diazotized o-aminoacetophenone. The preparation of a number of dyes of the above formulae is described.
