Abstract

939,121. Handling radio-active material. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY, EURATOM. July 3, 1962 [July 4, 1961; Oct. 24, 1961], No. 25528/62. Class 39 (4). A tool mounted on a wall by a universal joint 1 comprises an outer non-rotatable tube 4 slidable in a sheath 2 by a handle 7, a toolholder body part 16 being releasably secured to a bush 19 rigid with the tube, a bellows B being sealed between the body part 16 and the wall 15 of a hot cell. A tube 11 rotatable within the tube 4 by a handle 6 has a square section by which it is rotatably connected to a tubular extension 22 of a tool-holder body part 23, bearings 20, 21 in the part 16 supporting the tube 11 and extension 22. A tool holder 24 is releasably connected to the body part 23 by a spring-biased stud device 30. The tool, e.g. a gripper, is operated by a conical pusher 25 controlled by rods 12, 12a operated by a trigger 8 A bellows 29 seals the rod 12a to the part 23 and sealing-rings 28 are provided around the extension 22. Thus the tool may be moved linearly by sliding the tube 4, may be moved angularly by rotating the tube 11 and may be universally displaced by the joint 1. In order to remove the tubes 4, 11 and rod 12 the holder 24 is detached by pressing finger 31 and the part 16 is withdrawn by the handle 7 into a socket support 5 carried by the ball 1. The socket 5 causes pawls 17 carried by the part 16 to be released from the bush 19 so that after removal of the sheath 2 from the ball the tubes 4, 11 and rod 12 may be withdrawn.
