[Also in Group XL (a)] A remotely controlled manipulating device for performing operations behind a screening wall 5 comprises a support tube 1 mounted in a ball-joint 4, a head 7 carried by one end of the tube supporting by means of a universal suspension a member 2 fitted with a chuck jaw (not shown) and a head 8 carried by the other end of the tube supporting by a universal suspension a member 3 provided with a handle 14. Four rods 10 arranged about the pivot centres of the universal suspensions extend between plates 11, 12 mounted, respectively, in the members 2, 3, the rods being slidable in the heads 7, 8 whereby movement of the member 3 by the handle is transmitted to the member 2. A shroud 6 may surround that end of the tube 1 situated within the radioactivity contaminated space. In an alternative construction the heads 7, 8 contain separate sets of rods 10, movement of one set being transmitted to the other by hydraulic means.
