Abstract
938,826. Air cushion vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. June 27, 1962 [Aug. 17, 1961], No. 29676/61. Class 4. A ground-effect vehicle comprises a rigid structure which is projected against impact by utilisation of the air or gas flow, for generating the ground-effect gaseous cushion, to inflate a flexible structure which forms a buffer. In the embodiment shown, at the bowl of a vehicle, having a floor 2, buoyancy chamber 4, air grid 6, bracing members 5 and main air duct 7, a rigid bow structure 3 is extended by flexible walls 8 and 9 to form a peripheral skirt and gaseous curtain orifice 10, the wall 8 being connected to structure 3 by flexible diaphragms 11. In operation, with pressure air passing from grid 6 for discharge through orifice 10, the pockets formed by wall 8 and diaphragms 11 are inflated and tend to reduce impacts of the rigid structure against waves or solid objects. In a further embodiment the lower ends of walls 8 and 9 are constructed to provide for recirculation of the air issuing from orifice 10 through an outer orifice. The construction can be applied to parts of the vehicle other than the bow. Specification 929,671 is referred to.
