Abstract

938,821. Control systems for storage heating apparatus. SATCHWELL CONTROLS Ltd. April 11, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 13175/61. Class 38 (4). A temperature control system for storage heating apparatus wherein the heating of the apparatus takes place only during a " permitted " period such as an " off-peak " period between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. comprises a time switch 26 which is closed only during the " offpeak " period and which is provided with a dial 14 carrying two gear-wheels 15, 16 meshing with pinions 17, 18 which drive into a differential 19 by way of two electromagnetic clutches 20, 22, the clutch 20 being energized by means of a cycling thermostat 28 situated outside a building containing the storage heating apparatus on the thermostat comprising a heater 29 so that it functions as a loss meter, the input to the differential 19 by way of the gearing 15, 17 and clutch 20 being an indication of the integrated heat losses during a twenty-four hour period 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. which are required to be made good during the next permitted heating period. The output of the differential 19 drives a pinion 23 which drives a gear-wheel 24 carrying a switch 25 which when it reaches a cam 30 carried by the gear-wheel 16 switches on the heater of the storage device by means of a relay 27 with holding contacts 31a and energizes a clutch 20 whereby the gear-wheel 16 drives into the differential 19 whereby the switch 25 is then driven back towards the datum position the position of the switch at any instant being an indication of the heating demand which is unsatisfied. The heaters are switched off by the opening of the switch 26 at the end of the " off peak " period. In a second embodiment the integration is effected by a motor driving an integrating disc through sun and planet wheels and a spring-loaded brake device, a second motor driving a memory disc so that the integrating disc and the memory disc co-operate to make a switch which energizes the heater of the storage apparatus.
