A tubular filter element 1, preferably of polyamide gauze, has an integrally-moulded thin-walled bellows sleeve 6 and is secured between a recess 9 and a bore 10 in an engine sump 8 by a threaded ring 11, through which filtrate is withdrawn. The bellows sleeve serves to permit expansion and contraction of the element proper, and, if pre-compressed, serves to ensure longitudinally-tight fitting of it.
