A method of controlling the completion of sintering on a sintering machine (of the straight line or rotating table type) comprises automatically varying the quantity of sintering air (up- or down-draught) passing through the sinter bed in accordance with the position of the peak waste gas temperature in relation to the total length of the sinter bed. In the Figures thermocouples or other temperature sensing devices (e.g. suction pyrometers) 20 are placed in the last three windboxes 14 and the peak waste gas temperature under the grate 13 is determined by a detector 21 which is suitably of the balancing bridge network type. The signal from 21 is passed to a regulating device 22 which controls the fans or blowers 18 or 18<SP>1</SP> by altering the speed of the fan, the pitch of the blades or the degree of damping, the first being the preferable alternative.
