Abstract

938,000. Discharge lamp circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 11, 1960 [Nov. 14, 1959], No. 38826/60. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] A transistor oscillator, more particularly for supplying a fluorescent lamp, has a feedback circuit which applies a reverse voltage of at least 5 V. to the base of the transistor just before the transistor is cut off and a non linear element in the base circuit to limit the reverse base voltage. The Figure shows a push-pull oscillator similar to one of the embodiments of Specification 909,969. It comprises two transistors back coupled via a tuned output transformer 23, 24, 28 and also via capacitors 26 so as to oscillate at a frequency near to the cut-off valve of the transistors and to provide a reverse bias of at least 5 V. to each base before the corresponding transistor is cut off. It is explained that surges, for example due to a voltage regulator of a charging system 1-15 for the supply battery or due to switching or lightning, are prevented from causing collector breakdown by the reverse bias. Damage to the base circuit is prevented by non-linear symmetrical currentlimiting resistors 33 or by corresponding Zener diodes. In an alternative circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) the feedback capacitors are connected in series with the feedback windings and a single non-linear voltage limiting resistor is connected between the bases.
