Abstract
937,947. Soldering. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 24, 1962 [Aug. 29, 1961], No. 32652/62. Class 83 (4). Soldering of graphite bodies to one another or to other materials is effected in vacuo or inert gas using an alloy of gold containing at least 1% tantalum and/or niobium. The tantalum content may be up to 25% preferably 5-10% and the niobium content up to 10%, preferably not higher than 5%. In an embodiment a ring of wire of 95% gold, 5% tantalum is arranged between the ends of two graphite tubes and melted in vacuo by high-frequency heating to 1300 C. In other embodiments a circular piece of foil of 97% gold, 3% niobium is used to solder a graphite rod to a tungsten plate in argon and a strip of foil of 97% gold, 3% tantalum, is arranged between conically ground interfitting ends of a graphite tube and a ceramic alumina tube, heating in vacuo to 1300 C. Graphite may be joined to quartz or molybdenum. It is stated in the Specification to be known to join graphite metal using indium or indium alloy and graphite to aluminium using tin and to join graphite to titanium, zirconium or alloys thereof using solder containing one or more of copper, silver and gold.
