Abstract

The invention comprises pyrazole-3- or 5-amino-or hydroxy-4-carboxylic acid-N1-[5-nitro-2-furfurylidene]-hydrazines and their salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives; also their preparation by condensing a pyrazole-carboxylic acid hydrazide with a 5-nitro-furan-(2)-aldehyde. In particular compounds in which the pyrazole nucleus has a free amino group in the 3 or 5 position and is optionally N-substituted by an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, or aminoalkyl group, or by an aryl or aralkyl radical which may be substituted in the aryl portion; especially compounds of the general formulae <FORM:0937878/IV(a)/1> and <FORM:0937878/IV(a)/2> or N-acyl derivatives thereof, wherein R is a alkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or tertiary aminoalkyl (in which the N atom may form part of a ring) group, in which groups each alkyl radical contains 2-4 carbon atoms, or a phenyl or benzyl radical, and R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl radical. Pharmaceutical preparations comprise the above substances with a carrier. Solid (tablets, dragees, capsules) and liquid (solutions, suspensions, emulsions) forms are mentioned for local, oral or parenteral administration. They are active against bacteria and protozoa.
