Abstract

A polyolefin film that has previously undergone longitudinal orientation is stretched, at a temperature with the elastic range between the freezing point and the crystallite melting point of the polyolefin, in a transverse direction until the sheet appears substantially isotropic in polarized light. Polyolefins used are derived from monomers of the general formula CH2=CHR in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a straight chain or branched hydrocarbon radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms, especially low pressure polyethylene, polypropylene, and copolymers of ethylene and propylene, and mixtures of polyethylene and polypropylene. The specified temperature range for low pressure polyethylene is from about -100 DEG to 130 DEG C., and for polypropylene from about -40 DEG to 180 DEG C. Advantageously, transverse stretching is carried out on a hot film, immediately followings its manufacture at 40 DEG to 110 DEG C., especially 80 DEG -95 DEG C., to 103-120% of the original width of the film.
