Abstract
937,266. Moulding thermoplastic floor tiles. JOHN-MANVILLE CORPORATION. July 10, 1961 [April 4, 1961], No. 24824/61. Class 87(2). Vinyl, vinyl-asbestos or asphalt tiles are decoratively patterned, throughout the thickness by heating and calendering a layer of cut chips or particles into a coherent form. The chips are cut from one or more sheets 86 each of a different colour produced from a conventional mixer 1, heated mill rolls 4, 5, heated calender rolls 9, 10 and 13, 14 and cooler 18. The chip former 19 may comprise a hammer mill for irregular shapes or heater, extruder and cutter for more regular geometric shapes, e.g. discs, squares, cubes, tubes, spaghetti like particles &c. Different coloured and shaped chips are uniformly blended in mixer 20 and a uniform heated layer 21a is sheeted through heated rolls 25 and 26, with negligible residence time at the nip 27, and then calendered through heated rolls 31, 32 and 36, 37 to final thickness and surface. A cooler 41 is followed by cutter 42 which produces the final dimensions. Directional effects arising from the various rollers may virtually be eliminated by cutting and rotating sheet 21b through 90 degrees. One of the effects obtainable, Fig. 4, comprises a plurality of stripes 71, 72 intermeshed in a haphazard manner, the particles forming the layer 21a are comprised of rolls approximately “ inch diameter and of irregular lengths of from ¢ inch to 3-4 inches. Other effects are illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 (not shown).
