Abstract

937,248. Electric analogue calculating. CAMBRIDGE INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 42960/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXVIII] The invention is concerned with determining the efficiency of a boiler by measurement of the rise in temperature of the flue gases (t), the percentage of carbon (c) and hydrogen (h) in the fuel, the weight (w) in grams of water per 100 grams of fuel, the percentage (x) of free oxygen in the dry flue gases, the percentage (r) of combustibles in the dry flue gases and the calorific value of the fuel H. The percentage heat loss is said to be given approximately by The Figure shows an apparatus for evaluating the equation. Firstly the quantity x is evaluated by a magnetic oxygen meter 1 which produces an output reversed in polarity to that of a battery 4 to produce a current proportional to 21 - x. The current flows through a resistor 8 set in accordance with the calorific power of the fuel to develop a voltage representing the bottom term of the equation and apply it across a potentiometer slide wire 7. The first of the three top terms is developed as a voltage from thermocouples in the boiler air supply and flue gases or a resistance thermometer and multiplied by a resistor 12 in two parts set respectively to c and h. The value r is determined from a Katharometer 13 which may be as described in Application No. 19615/61 multiplied by c and h values in a two-part resistor 14. The third term in the top of the equation is converted into a voltage by allowing the current 21 - x to flow through a resistor set in accordance with h and w. The three voltages thus developed are applied in series to the potentiometer by a servo amplifier 10 and slider 9. The potentiometer is self-balancing and the position of the slider gives boiler efficiency.
