Abstract

936,851. Engine stop-gear; steam turbine plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 6, 1959 [July 18, 1958], No. 23110/58. Classes 110 (3) and 122 (4). The high pressure stop valve 110 and throttle valve 109 of a steam turbine are controlled by a load-sensitive governor 4, Fig. 1, to close simultaneously in the event of loss of load. Where reheat is used the reheat emergency valve 111 and the reheat interceptor valve 112 are similarly controlled. The turbine shown drives a main alternator 1 and comprises high, intermediate and low pressure cylinders 101, 102 and 103 respectively and reheaters 105 between cylinders 101 and 102. The speedsensitive or primary governor 104 is connected in the normal manner to the valve actuators 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the valves 110, 109, 112 and 111 respectively. An auxiliary alternator 100 coupled to the main alternator is connected by lines 3 to the load-sensitive or secondary governor 4. The throttle valve and reheat interceptor valve spindles are mechanically connected respectively to on-off switches 15, 18 which control the circuits 5, 8 of the actuators 9, 12 respectively of the valves 110 and 111 so that these circuits are open when the valve controlling them is closed. A switch 16 sensitive to the exhaust pressure of cylinder 102 is connected by a circuit 17 to the secondary governor 4 to reset the latter when the exhaust pressure drops below a predetermined value and the control of valves 109-112 is then returned to the primary governor 104. On loss of turbine load the stop valves 110 and reheat emergency valves 111 are closed by the secondary governor 4 simultaneously with the throttle valves 109 and interceptor valves 112, and due to the switches 15, 18, re-open automatically when the valves 109 and 112 are closed. If, however, a throttle valve 109 or interceptor valve 112 is faulty and does not close, the associated stop valve 110 or emergency valve 111 will remain closed even after the secondary governor has been re-set by the switch 16 since the servomotors of those valves have insufficient power to re-open them against full boiler pressure.
