A railway traffic indicating system for recording the movement of a single axle or a closely adjacent group of axles of a rail vehicle over a control point comprises contactors I, II which are operated by the presence of an axle or group of axles on the overlapping rail sections 13, 14, respectively, to change over their associated contacts and, associated with each direction of traffic, e.g. left to right, a presence relay B, a slowrelease relay C and an indicating relay D which produces an output pulse of fixed duration after complete traverse of the control point by an axle or group of axles. The entry of axle 20 into portion 15-16 of the control point changes over contact I from position I 2 to I 3 and energizes relay B. Relay contact B 4 opens in the circuit of the presence relay E associated with the opposite direction of traffic, contact B 2 prepares a hold circuit for the B relay and a contact is switched from position B 5 to B 3 to prepare a circuit for operation of relay C. When the axle enters portion 16-17 contact II changes over from position II 2 to II 3 in which it completes the hold circuit for relay B. On entering portion 17-18 the axle changes contact I back to the I 2 position in which it energizes slow-release relay C. When the axle moves off the control point contact II changes back to the II 2 position, relay B releases and by changing over a contact from the B 3 position to the B 5 position de-energizes relay C and energizes relay D which provides an output indication signal during the slow-release period of relay C. To prevent the operation of relay B by a second axle or axle group interfering with the duration of the indicator signal, a hold contact D 2 maintains relay D energized via contact C 2 until relay C releases. In the arrangement a group of axles, e.g. axles 21 and 23, which are spaced apart a distance less than the length 15-18 of the control point act as a single actuating unit.
