Abstract

936,431. Steering boats. JERVIS CORPORATION. Oct. 16, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 37063/61. Class 114. Rotational movement of a steering wheel 12 in a boat, Fig. 1, is translated into axial movement of a rod 19 connected to an outboard motor 20, or a rudder, by a sheathed flexible tensioned cable 15 wrapped in grooves 42, Fig. 2, around a spindle 11 to which the steering wheel is fixed, and around a pulley 71 in a casing 17 attached by a ball and socket, (see Fig. 5, not shown) to the transom 18. A slider element 64, Fig. 7, is mounted on the cable 15, preferably by the cable being divided inside the housing 17 into portions 15<SP>1</SP> and 15<SP>11</SP> and balls being crimped on to the end of these portions, and is constrained by the walls of the housing 17 to move in a straight line as the steering wheel 12 is turned. The rod 54, Fig. 7, 19, Fig. 1, connects the element 64 and the outboard motor 20, or rudder. The cable passes from the spindle 11 to the housing 17 through flexible outer casings 16 under compression, and both runs of the casings 16 may be protected by a synthetic plastic sheath 50. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement in which the rotation of the spindle 11<SP>1</SP>, secured to the steering wheel, is restricted to just under two complete turns by a plate 97 having an annular slot 98 which a dog 99 fixed to the spindle engages and a lug 96 which engages a lug 95 on the spindle casing 14<SP>1</SP> to prevent further rotation of the plate. The cable 15 may be replaced by a roller chain passing over sprockets which replace the pulley 71 and the grooves 42 on the spindle 11.
