Abstract
936,125. Spacing conductors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Feb. 19, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961; Oct. 12, 1961], Nos. 6147/61 and 36671/61. Class 36. A spacer for bundled conductors of overhead lines comprises at least two clamps attached to two conductors of the bundle and spaced apart by a tubular strut and tied together by a tie member within the tubular strut. In the embodiments of Figs. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 (Figs. 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 not shown), the strut is in the form of a steel spring, the part between the clamps having abutting turns. As shown, Fig. 1, the ends of the strut are each held in a socket at one end of a cast metal clamp 8, the other end of which clamps a horizontal cable 5 or 6. A corrugated metal strip tie member 4 of steel with its plane perpendicular to the common plane of cables 5 and 6 has its ends each inserted in a slot formed in the closed wall of the socket. Joints are made between the spring strut and the tie member and the clamps by compressing the clamp at those ends by a tool. Such an arrangement allows extension of the spring strut and longitudinal movements of the cables limited by the tie but no relative vertical movement of the cables. In the arrangements of Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 (not shown), the tie member is a strip without the corrugations and its ends, instead of being jointed to the clamps, are resiliently held inside the clamp body allowing some extension of the spring strut. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, showing a horizontal cross-section, the die is, as before, a plane steel strip but the strut is a rigid aluminium tube enclosing the tie, the tie ends being jointed to the clamps and the strut ends being pivotally fixed to the clamp by means of a Neophene sleeve 29 fitted at the ends of the strut and engaged to the clamp end by an integral flange 30. Also fitted to the strut ends are nylon plugs 22 with concave surfaces 23 which butt against convex end surfaces of the clamps, there being opposing V-shaped slots in the plugs 22 and the clamp end in the passage of the tie. Such an arrangement allows only relative longitudinal and angular movements of the spaced cables. For a bundle containing more than two conductors, a required number of spacers depending on the arrangement of the conductors are provided, the clamps being of such shape as to allow a suitable number of ties and struts to be attached to them.
