Abstract

936,109. Educational appliances; autographic recording apparatus. A.B. SANFORD. Aug. 2, 1962, No. 29811/62. Classes 16 and 146. (2) A question and answer teaching apparatus adapted to be used with a programmed tape of either the type on which an answer is written in response to a question or of the type on which a correct answer is selected from a multiple of preprinted answers, comprises a case with a hinged and fastened lid 9, Fig. 4. The lid 9 is provided with a first opening 35, Fig. 2, which may be covered by a transparent sheet 37, through which a question may be read, a hinged cover 39 being provided for dealing with longer questions. A second opening 41 is used for writing in of the answer, whereupon the programmed tape 71, Fig. 4, resting on a supportplate 31, removably mounted on pillars 33, is advanced by a knob 27, Fig. 2, so that the written answer appears below a transparent window 43 and the corresponding preprinted answer in the opening 41. The student on checking both answers may then use a pencil or a stylus and insert it into one of the openings 45 or 47, in the window 43 depending on whether the answer was right or wrong. Below the first opening 35, there is a plurality of transparent windows 53, 55, 57 in which appear the preprinted answers, when the alternative programmed tape is used, and the student selects the apparently correct answer by lifting one of the opaque covers 59, 61, 63, an underlying statement telling him whether or not the answer is correct and why. Lifting of any of the covers perforates the tape 71 by a tab 67 on the covers, thereby marking the tape and the student selects a further answer and lifts the corresponding cover if his preceding answer was incorrect. An open frame 40, for a drawing or diagram, may be provided and the space 73 within the housing may be used for storage of other programmed tapes.
